"Land Of The Lost" is by all counts all too familiar but still interesting and funny enough to hold its own. To begin with, it has a story that is quite similar to Eric Brevig's "Journey To The Center Of The Earth" then evolves into something like "Superman" and ends up like Robert Zemeckis' 1985 classic "Back To The Future."
The story-telling is straight to the point. While keeping it simple, the story revisits the 70s touch of lizard-like creatures called Sleestaks, monkey people and a sneaky, sarcastic T-Rex as well. Brought to life with loads of CGI, it does boast a great mixture of vibrant colours, making it seem all too real. If only "Land Of The Lost" were released in 3-D, now wouldn't that be quite the ride!
In this movie, Will Ferrell reprises his role as the idiotic person who makes you laugh without ever feeling bad about it. Some say Ferrell is the difference between what is hilarious and what is downright hilarious. While at it, Ferrell shares most of the bawdy humour with co-star Danny McBride who plays a redneck survivalist, and Anna Friel (TV's "Pushing Daisies") who plays research assistant Holly. In a place where past, present and future are fused together, what seems even odder is the shocking placement of both Ferrell's and McBride's adult humour in what we would think to be a family-friendly comedy movie.
By and large, "Land of The Lost" isn't raunchy or extreme enough for most of Ferrell's fans, nor is it friendly enough for kids to safely enjoy. This movie, therefore, remains right where the title says.
